The prints
Fourteen prints, each one beginning as a photograph Christie Green took: the hide and heart of elk, the roe and silver skin of sockeye salmon, turkey and pheasant feather, the bed of Gallina Creek, lichen at Tres Piedras.
Four generations
The shapes come from two seamstresses, my grandmother Irma Ruth and my mother Marsha Ruth, who imagined and sewed their own clothes and carried a soft, fierce femininity. My daughter Olivia sews too, and makes most of her wardrobe from salvaged cloth. Four generations of us, making our own clothes.
The making
Every pattern is made with Lorraine Gruys, in her Santa Fe studio. She learned to sew from her grandmother and has sewn for sixty-five years. Made to order in Santa Fe and Los Angeles.
